Every driveway, patio, and pool deck we install follows Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute standards — the accepted engineering baseline for segmental paver assemblies in North America. Below is what that actually means on your project, and why the details matter.

What ICPI standards require.

Aggregate base engineered to load

Every driveway we install receives a minimum 6–8 inches of compacted Class II road base, installed in lifts and compacted between each. Patios and pool decks get 4–6 inches. That base depth is what keeps segmental pavers flat for 30+ years.

ASTM C33 bedding sand, screeded

One inch of washed, angular concrete sand meeting ASTM C33 specification, screeded flat before paver placement. Mason sand, stone dust, and beach sand all fail ICPI — we don't use them.

Precision plate compaction

Pavers are compacted with a plate compactor rated to the paver format, typically 5,000-lb-force class. Compaction happens after joint sand is broadcast so the sand locks the assembly together.

Polymeric joint sand and stabilization

Every joint gets polymeric sand — activated after final placement — which cures into a semi-rigid joint that resists weed growth, ant intrusion, and water washout while still allowing the assembly to flex.

Edge restraint at every unsupported perimeter

Steel or concrete-formed edge restraint at every free edge of the paver field. Without it, the perimeter migrates and the field opens. This is the single most common failure mode in bargain-bid installations.

Drainage integrated with the assembly

Channel drains, French drains, and permeable base sections are designed into the project from day one, not bolted on when problems appear. Every hillside, coastal, or clay-soil site gets an engineered drainage strategy before we break ground.

Why this matters for your project.

Segmental pavers are an engineered assembly, not a decorative surface. What separates a driveway that lasts 40 years from one that heaves in five is not the paver — it's what's underneath. ICPI's Design and Construction of Interlocking Concrete Pavements is the industry reference, and it exists because the failure modes of a poorly built paver field are well documented and expensive to unwind.

Bargain bids skip the base depth, use unwashed sand, omit edge restraint, or skip polymeric jointing. Each of those substitutions saves the installer money and produces a surface that looks identical for the first year. The failures show up in year three and compound from there.

We install to ICPI standards on every project because it's the only way we've found to underwrite a 25-year installation warranty. If we cut corners on the base, we'd be servicing warranty claims instead of building new projects.
