Full pool-deck rebuilds — demo, base, install — run $22-$35/sq ft for concrete, interlocking, or unit pavers. Straightforward overlays over an existing structurally sound concrete deck start at $18/sq ft because the base work is already done. If your existing deck is cracked or sinking, an overlay is a bandage; rebuild instead.

Cool-surface materials

For Southern California pool decks we most often specify large-format concrete or unit pavers in light, tumbled finishes — colors and textures chosen to stay cooler underfoot in direct sun. Belgard's Elements and Artforms series, along with Angelus and Orco light-toned formats, are our standard specs. A coordinated flagstone accent band around the coping is a common upgrade.

Coping integration

The single biggest visual cost driver on a pool deck is coping. A flush, mitered concrete-paver coping in the same material as the field reads architectural but adds meaningful cost. A contrasting bullnose coping in a coordinated flagstone or unit paver is often the better dollar-for-dollar move.

Salt, chlorine, and freeze-thaw

Pool decks live in a corrosive micro-climate. We install using stainless edge restraint where it will be visible, salt-tolerant polymeric sand, and where the paver is close to salt-water pool overflow, sealed assemblies. This adds a few percent to the project and dramatically extends life.

Frequently asked

Answers.

How much does a pool deck cost per square foot in California?
$22 to $35 per installed square foot for a full concrete or unit-paver pool deck rebuild. Overlays of existing decks start around $18 per square foot.
What paver stays coolest underfoot on a pool deck?
Light-toned, large-format concrete or unit pavers in tumbled finishes stay noticeably cooler than dark concrete slabs. Color and texture matter more than brand.
Can pavers go over an existing concrete pool deck?
Yes, when the existing slab is structurally sound and drains correctly. We overlay with a bonded concrete-paver system.
How slip-resistant are paver pool decks?
Textured concrete pavers, interlocking pavers, and flagstone all meet or exceed ANSI slip-resistance standards for wet pool decks.
